Daniel Contreras opened El Güero Canelo in 1993 as a single hot dog cart in South Tucson, building it into three restaurants and a bakery that supplies its signature bolillo bread. In 2018 the James Beard Foundation named it an America's Classics recipient, recognizing the Sonoran hot dog, a bacon-wrapped frank piled with beans and fresh toppings, as a true regional classic.
The original location on South 12th Avenue still serves it from a walk-up window.
