Best Sonoran Hot Dog · Tucson, AZ
Daniel Contreras opened El Guero Canelo in 1993 as a single hot dog cart in South Tucson, and built it into three restaurants plus a bakery that supplies its signature bolillo bread.
In 2018 the James Beard Foundation named it an America’s Classics recipient, recognizing the Sonoran hot dog, a bacon-wrapped frank piled with beans and fresh toppings, as a true regional classic. Nearly eight hundred Yelp reviews and hundreds more on Tripadvisor keep the public record current. In 2026 that record cleared our bar: the Centurion Award for Best Sonoran Hot Dog in Tucson.
The original location at 5201 S 12th Ave still serves from a walk-up window.

Each Centurion Award is a dated record tied to one year’s evaluation — earned annually, never carried over. Open a year for the full citation and verification details.
Awards run one calendar year and renew only if the business clears the bar again. Selection is by published criteria, never for sale.
Visit El Güero Canelo
This page is the standing record for El Güero Canelo (2026). It was not bought, voted on, or sponsored — only winners are published, and an award that stops holding up is revoked, not quietly removed. For hours, bookings, and live reviews, go straight to the business itself.
If you’ve put in the years, you may already clear the bar. Evaluation is free, private, and never for sale.
