Stroud's has served pan-fried chicken family-style since 1933 under the motto 'We choke our own chickens.' Skillet-fried birds arrive with mashed potatoes, pan gravy, and the famous cinnamon rolls, in a converted log-cabin farmhouse at the Oak Ridge Manor location north of the city.
Stroud's was the first restaurant to win a James Beard America's Classics award in the home-style category — recognition for a Kansas City fried-chicken tradition kept exactly as it was.
